1 What really makes a leader ?

Here's one of the 'secrets' on what it really takes to be a leader! This is applicable across any organisation, whether it's in a blue chip multinational organisation, an owner-managed small business, a government department or agency, a local authority or even a not-for-profit organisation...
Some people are natural born leaders just as some people are natural musicians, artists or athletes but true leadership is shaped, refined and developed on an ongoing basis even for those people who find that they are naturally gifted with leadership characteristics from an early age. During my career progression as a professional management consultant with an international client base I have had the honour and privilege of meeting leaders across many organisations and here's one of the common traits evident in particularly effective leaders that I have met might surprise you.... HUMILITY!
These are only a few of the attributes and behaviours demonstrated by individuals who are considered to be the most effective leaders in their organisations by both the hierarchy and by people at all levels.
Humility emerged as one of the key characteristics amongst many of the effective leaders that I have met during the course of my career. Humility can be characterised by a number of component attributes which include:
• a desire to serve others;
• a self-depreciating sense of humour;
• being prepared to learn from others;
• willingness to admit mistakes and implement the suggestions of others where there is merit in doing so;
• ensuring that credit is given where credit is due;
• celebrating the success of others and not wanting to "hog the limelight";
• demonstrating a sense of empathy towards others;
• listening to their concerns and showing sensitivity to their needs and feelings.
1 Leadership Theory - Quick Facts About Leadership Theories

World news
Leadership theories can be distinguished between who gets to be a leader and a follower. There are quite a number of leadership theories, it is very important for an individual to understand each leadership theory and note how it affects their individual lives. Mentioned under are some these leadership theories.
The great man theory
This theory basically tries to imply that leadership is hereditary. It tries to show that regardless of what great leaders are born like that and not made. This theory makes leadership look more of a male affair and it was a theory that was used back in the day. Individuals who were born of a strong father figure were expected to live up to the same expectations.
The trait theory
This theory implies that individuals will always have the same traits of there hereditary fathers in them. This will generally border around personality and behavior. This is more like the great man theory although it has been witnessed that not all those who have this traits end up being leaders.
Contingency theory
This type of leadership is usually done depending on a particular environment. This will be done depending on what measures need to be taken. It will basically mean that leadership styles are different a good leader should know when to apply what style.
Situational theories
This theory just as the name implies will be done according to the situation an individuals finds themselves in. a good leader will be able to access the situation before they determine the type of leadership style to use.
Behavioral theories
Just like the great man theory this theory means that great leaders are born and that good leaders will always make decisions based on their personal intuition and how they feel about the situation they are in. it also tries to show however that individuals can learn how to behave through learning through training and observation.
Participative theories
This theory will try to incorporate all the members of an organization. It seeks to make evry body a part of making decisions in the organization. A good leader in this type of leadership will listen to all the employees before making the final decision.
Management theories
This type of leadership focuses on organization and group leadership. In this system employees are rewarded according to how they are performing in the organization. They are also in line for punishments according to their performances individually. This type of theory is aimed at making all individuals responsible and accountable for all of their actions in the organization.
Relationship theories
This leadership theory is based on how the leader works with his or her followers. This type of leadership makes the employees more productive as the leader will be focused on their individual growth. It helps build strong groups for collective success. Leaders in this type of leadership are usually very ethical and moral standards are supposed to be very high. This is because although the main aim is to ensure all individuals in this groups gets to grow.Leadership styles are different to all individuals and a good leader regardless of which type of leadership should have the power to know what will best suit his organization.0 What I have been reading lately

Here are a few of the articles that have caught my attention recently:
- Googler and AI guru Peter Norvig on what artificial intelligence has been able to do and what was a surprise ([1])
- Watson's performance in Jeopardy was impressive, but even Google and Bing get the right answers to Jeopardy questions more often than the average human ([1])
- The Google Translate app is downright amazing. Almost a babel fish in my ear, just remarkable. ([1])
- Kicking off a project to rewrite code is a really bad idea, but people want to do it all the time ([1] [2])
- Excellent answer on why Dropbox succeeded ([1])
- Dilbert on the morality of using web click data. Ouch! ([1])
- Old but good Slate article on why we don't have ubiquitous free Wifi. Makes me sad. ([1])
- Enjoyable rant against stealth mode startups ([1])
- Internet investment funds and unprofitable companies going public? The dot-com bubble is back, baby! ([1] [2])
1 Comparing Google Megastore
التسميات:
World news
A small pile of Googlers recently presented a paper, "Megastore: Providing Scalable, Highl
Available Storage for Interactive Services" (PDF) that details the architecture of a major distributed database used at Google.
Megastore "has been widely deployed within Google for several years ... handles more than three billion write and 20 billion read transitions daily ... [and] stores nearly a petabyte ... across many datacenters."
Others have already summarized the paper ([1] [2]), so I'll focus on my reaction to it. What I found surprising about Megastore, especially when comparing to other large scale databases, is that it favors consistency over performance.
For consistency, Megastore provides "full ACID semantics within partitions", "supports two-phase commit across entity groups", guarantees that reads always see the last write, uses Paxos for confirming consensus among replicas, and uses distributed locks between "coordinator processes" as part of detecting failures. This is all unusually strong compared to the more casual eventual consistency offered by databases like Amazon's Dynamo, Yahoo's HBase, and Facebook's Cassandra.
The problem with providing Megastore's level of consistency is performance. The paper mostly describes Megastore's performance in sunny terms, but, when you look at the details, it does not compare favorably with other databases. Megastore has "average read latencies of tens of milliseconds" and "average write latencies of 100-400 milliseconds". In addition, Megastore has a limit of "a few writes per second per entity group" because higher write rates will cause conflicts, retries, and even worse performance.
By comparison, Facebook expects 4ms reads and 5ms writes on their database, so Megastore is an order of magnitude or two slower than what Facebook developers appear to be willing to tolerate.
Google application developers seem to find the latency to be a hassle as well. The paper says that Googlers find the latency "tolerable" but often have to "hide write latency from users" and "choose entity groups carefully".
This makes me wonder if Google has made the right tradeoff here. Is it really easier for application developers to deal with high latency all of the time than to almost always have low latency but have to worry more about consistency issues? Most large scale databases have made the choice the other way. Quite surprising.
Update: Googler DeWitt Clinton writes with a good point: "We build on top of Megastore when we require some of those characteristics (availability, consistency), and to Bigtable directly when we require low latency and high throughput instead. So it's up to the application to decide what tradeoffs to make, definitely not one-size-fits-all
